Exiles is “a brutal and atmospheric addendum to the greatest love story of all time,” aka Romeo & Juliet. It imagines the story, set in contemporary times, if Romeo and Juliet were able to run away together. And asks the question: Would their love survive? The film co-stars Shane Coffey (aka PLL’s Holden Strauss and one of Troian’s BFFs in real life) as Troian’s Romeo — and the setting, cinematography, and direction are beautiful. This is a film that immerses you, corners you, and haunts you — and Troian’s performance is a big part of that effectiveness. The young artist has not only written and produced the short, but gives an intensely raw and beautiful performance as a young girl trying to make sense of love, life, and isolation.
It’s pretty neat to see Troian outside the role of Spencer Hastings. As much as we love watching her play the determined brainiac, we caught a glimpse of Troian’s extraordinary acting ability when Spence went off the deep end in Season 3. PLL only allows for so much experimentation, so it’s nice to see Troian taking chances in her own projects. We can’t wait to see what she does next!
