What Is the Dancing With the Stars Switch-Up Twist? “Petrifying” Details Revealed

When we asked Dancing With the Stars Season 18 fans for their thoughts on the new "Switch-Up" twist, the response was not positive. Well, it may even be scarier than you thought!

As pro Sharna Burgess described it to On the Red Carpet, at some point in the season, viewers will get to choose who the celebrities dance with for one week. So it is just for one week... however... the celeb then gets to choose which pro they want to stay with.

"So the option is, they could turn around and go, 'Thanks for the good times, I'm gonna go over this way," Sharna told OTRC. Meanwhile, Cheryl Burke told E! that the switch is happening in Week 3.

Even if it does happen that early, you'd have to imagine the original partnerships would be strong and the celebs wouldn't want to switch. That's what we picture happening — just a one-week swap and then back "home" again. But what if someone does want to change? What if they prefer their new pro and think they may have a better shot with that person? How awkward. And what happens to the pro's original partner — do they get the celeb's past pro?

Maybe these questions won't be relevant once the twist emerges and everything is easy, fun and fine, but it's a mind-messer. Right now, it's hard to see how this would work.

Sharna was thrilled to be paired with ice dancer Charlie White, but now she's a little worried about losing him. She joked that she might bribe him to stay. "It's crazy and it's different and, you know, in many ways I think it's exciting for our audience because it's so different,” she said. “It's petrifying for us because it's so different. But we'll see how it works out. It could be great, it could be terrible, but you've got to try it to find out, right?" Hmm...we’ll see.

Sharna shouldn't worry too much about Charlie, though. He said he’s used to having one ice dance partner for 17 years — his now DWTS competitor Meryl Davis — so even if he and Sharna get a week off from each other, they’ll get back together. This is all starting to sound like a soap opera!

What do you think about this twist on top of the twist? By the way, Derek Hough told On the Red Carpet he suggested a partner swap many seasons ago, so he’s excited to see what happens now.

DWTS Season 18 premieres Monday, March 17 at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.
