Once Upon a Time: When Did Rumplestiltskin Regain His Memories?
On Once Upon a Time Season 2, Episode 17: "Welcome to Storybrooke," we got a peek into Storybrooke's past, including one amusing scene where Regina (Lana Parrilla) barged in on Mr. Gold (Robert Carlyle) to complain that she wasn't happy with the curse, only to find him apparently unable to remember his past, just like everyone else.
Some fans are wondering if Rumple really did lose his memory, or if he was just messing with Regina because, well, he's Rumplestiltskin and that's the kind of thing he does. A comment from show creators Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis from last May clarifies the situation.
As you can see in the video below, Adam and Edward say explicitly that Gold got his Fairytale Land memories back after Emma (Jennifer Morrison) came to town. Specifically, it happened "when he heard her name in the pilot," which is why he asked Snow White (Ginnifer Goodwin) and Prince Charming (Josh Dallas) for her name in the first place.
While this explanation hasn't been made explicit on screen, it is supported by what we've seen. Gold definitely got a strange look on his face when he first heard Emma's name. Plus, in Season 2 he needed the enchanted cloak to cross the town line without losing his memory, and we know that people who didn't lose their memories due to the curse can cross the town line just fine.
Of course, this raises a different question: If he didn't remember before Emma showed up, how and why did Mr. Gold bring Henry (Jared Gilmore) to Storybrooke?
