When Does Filming Start For Downton Abbey Season 5?

Fun fact: Downton Abbey’s fifth season started filming the same month Season 4 wrapped in the US. It’s yet another quirk of the whole the UK-gets-to-see-it-first deal when it comes to this particular series. Creator and writer Julian Fellowes shared the big news during a recent interview with famous newsman Charlie Rose.

“[Season 5] starts filming in February,” Julian said, blustering a bit at the quick turnaround. In the UK, Season 4 wrapped on November 10 with the Christmas Special debuting on December 25. Seasoned pro that he is, however, Julian had already begun work on the next round of scripts before Christmas came 'round.

“I’ve started already,” Julian explains without giving any particular details away about what we loyal fans can expect in the series’s fifth installment. We already know the majority of the major characters, including Robert (Hugh Bonneville), Cora (Elizabeth McGovern), Edith (Laura Carmichael), Tom (Allen Leech), and Mary (Michelle Dockery) are locked in for another year.

Not so clear is whether the Dowager (Maggie Smith) will be returning for a fifth season. Pass the smelling salts. We’re feeling faint.

As for the actual filming, we know things kicked off in February and, thanks to a little intel from Joanne Froggatt (Anna Bates), will wrap at the end of August. That means just a handful of weeks before the show typically airs in the U.K.!

Season 4 premiered in the US on Sunday, January 5 (also Charlie Rose’s birthday!) and came to an end on Sunday, February 23 (too sad to celebrate). Season 5 doesn't have an air date quite yet but what do you hope to see happen? Tell us in the comments below!
