When Does The Walking Dead Spin-Off Premiere?

AMC is launching a "companion series" for The Walking Dead, 'cause even TV shows get lonely sometimes.

We definitely get lonely for zombie company when TWD is off the air, so we're anxiously awaiting the arrival of the series. When is it showing up? Maddeningly enough, we don't know more on that front than we did the day they announced the news. It was September 2013 when AMC revealed plans for the companion show, which everyone started calling a "spin-off," even though no characters are actually being spun off from the main show.

At the time, Deadline reported, the new drama series was projected to have "a target on-air date of 2015." That's the last "official" word on the premiere date, and it's not even a date. It's a year.

It's next year, though, and we've already mentioned how nice it would be to see the companion series air right after the end of the main TWD series. AMC has been airing 16 episodes of TWD, from October to March, taking a break from parts of December to February. Ideally, the spin-off/companion show would pick up the baton from Season 5, with a premiere date of April or May 2015 and air until August or September, preparing us to return to the mother show for the Season 6 premiere in October 2015.

But that's just what we want to happen. What will happen? Right now, TWD honchos Robert Kirkman, Gale Anne Hurd and David Alpert are all on board to executive produce the spin-off, and AMC recently hired Dave Erickson to co-write and executive produce the series. So we know stuff is getting done, we just don't know what stuff yet or when it will be revealed.

All we do know is the spin-off will not be set in Georgia (like the main show), and it will not feature any characters from the TV show or the comic books. It will feature brand new characters, possibly in a prequel but even that is just a rumor at this point.

So stay tuned for updates on casting, themes, and an official premiere date. Do you hope they air the series in the late spring/summer, during TWD break time, or would you rather it air around the same time as TWD? Weigh in below!

The Walking Dead Season 5 premieres in October 2014 on AMC.
