Whitney Houston and Jordin Sparks Movie ‘Sparkle’ Will Be Released Summer 2012

Despite the shocking, untimely death of pop idol Whitney Houston, Sony will push through with its release of the re-make of the 1976 musical-drama Sparkle, which stars Houston, former Idol winner Jordin Sparks, and The Voice judge Cee Lo Green. This marks Houston's return to feature films after more than 10 years. The 48-year-old icon plays the mother of three sisters (one of them Sparks) who have started a Mo-town singing group. As the group rises in the music business, the family struggles with the challenges of fame and drugs. Houston also served as an executive producer on the film and recorded several songs, which were originals penned by R. Kelly.

Variety reports the film is still slated to make its summer release date of August 17, 2012. Sony has issued no statement on Sparkle's release, but did issue this statement on Houston on Saturday, February 11, "Like all those who knew and loved her, we are shocked and saddened and the world has lost an incomparable talent. Right now our thoughts are with her daughter, her family and her friends."
