Suspect #1: Melissa Hastings Why she might be “A”:Melissa (Torrey DeVitto) claims to only have sent threatening texts to Alison (Sasha Pieterse), but we find that dubious. And it’s hard not to suspect that Melissa was the person who swiped that gun from her dad’s desk. Plus, it seems like quite the coincidence that, right after the girls see Melissa in the video from the night of Ali’s disappearance, the girls then get a text from “A” that tries to punish them for watching that video. Perhaps Melissa was not happy about her big film debut.
Why she might not be “A”: She’s convincing about wanting to support Spencer (Troian Bellisario) through their family tumult, and we just can’t believe that Melissa would actually hurt Spence. Of course, that doesn’t mean that Melissa isn’t somehow up to no good, especially when she appears to slip up and Spencer catches the fact that the barn TV doesn’t work, despite Melissa’s claim to be watching it. Plus, the Hastings girls strike us more as readers than TV-watchers anyway.
Suspect #2: Garrett Reynolds Why he might be “A”: We’ve been wondering who sent Hanna that police report, and Detective Wilden claims it wasn’t him, but maybe Garrett (Yani Gellman) sent it, since he’s obviously familiar with police reports (not that we ever see him doing much paperwork). And we wonder if Melissa was trying to tell Spencer that Garrett is “A” by hinting at the fact that she overshared to him. Then again, it’s impossible to overshare to “A,” since there’s nothing “A” doesn’t already know — and then some.
Why he might not be “A”: Frankly, his stalking skills don’t seem super-stealthy, since the girls clearly saw him sitting in his car while they dealt with Jonah last week. But speaking of his car, could he be that Maya (Bianca Lawson) alleged talked to at the bus station, given that he owns a black car? Either way, Garrett does so much driving that we’d hate to see how much he spends at the gas pump, with gas prices soaring these days.
Suspect #3: Maya St. Germain Why she might be “A”: It’s definitely suspicious that Maya was considering leaving town and then was seen chatting with someone in a car, making us wonder if the car’s driver was her secret ex-boyfriend — or one of the many other kinda-creepy guys Maya has been spotted with lately, like Noel (Brant Daugherty) or Jason (Drew Van Acker). And we’re still curious about Maya mentioning that she was going through Ali’s things two weeks ago. Emily (Shay Mitchell) may trust Maya, but that doesn’t mean that we do.
Why she might not be “A”: The possibility remains that Maya — instead of being “A” herself — was actually kidnapped by “A.” Otherwise, we assume that Maya would have called Emily more than just the one time so as not to let her get suspicious. Then again, Maya also hasn’t emptied her voicemail recently, so she doesn’t appear to be up on proper cell-phone decorum.
