Who Is Briston Maroney? American Idol 2014 Contestant Background Info
The American Idoljudges keep joking that so many of the singers this season have inherent stage names, and 15-year-old Briston Maroney is certainly no exception. Although Jennifer Lopez called him “just a little baby,” the Knoxville, Tennessee, native has a voice that belies his young age.
The judges were taken aback by Briston’s mature and insanely unique vocal tone during his first audition, a rendition of The Rolling Stones’ “You Can’t Always Get What You Want,” but they were also concerned about him losing his voice due to strain. He assured them all is good, however, saying good-naturedly, “It sounds a lot worse than it feels.” And we bet getting that Golden Ticket felt pretty good, too.
What else do we know about this high school sophomore? According to Briston himself, his great-grandfather was a Nashville recording artist and the original owner of that killer Gibson guitar Briston played during his audition.
One thing we know is that the teen missed a day of school to audition when Idol came to his town. But does he regret ditching? Not so much, telling Knoxville.com saying he would apologize to his teachers “but it wouldn’t be completely sincere right now.”
Although this Phillip Phillips fan is “just a little baby,” he wasn’t lying when he said he’s been performing music for a long time. In fact, according to MJ’s Big Blog, Briston has been a member of a band called Subtle Clutch since middle school. The four-person folk group has even already put out a single on iTunes called “Railroad.” Briston reportedly also has other songs that can be downloaded through The Electric Fetus and Waterloo Records.
Alas, teen and tween girls might be upset to know that sources are pretty sure Briston has a girlfriend, as a girl named Laura is all over his Twitter and Instagram feeds. Sorry, ladies. But the good news is that he'll have one person cheering him on during the live shows, as he's in the Top 31.
