X Factor 2013: Who Is Carlos Guevara? Watch All Performances
A handful of X Factor contestants capture our hearts strings every season, and few tugged tighter than 16-year-old Carlos Guevera . His souldful rendition of John Mayer’s “Gravity” impressed us, and we couldn’t believe such a mature voice came from someone who is still in high school. But while singing seems to come easy for Carlos, he’s had a relatively difficult journey so far.
Diagnosed with Tourette syndrome and obsessive compulsive disorder at the age of 12, Carlos suffered few symptoms until he entered high school. “At the beginning of my freshman year I was on the football team and was elected vice president of the entire school. It seemed like my life was perfect but then all of a sudden it was like a storm,” Guevara told People.
While Carlos’s diagnosis means he suffers involuntary outbursts and tics, his symptoms melt away when he sings. For the Four Chair Challenge, Carlos sang “Ain’t No Sunshine” by Bill Withers, earning an early seat in the Boys Top 4. While that meant sitting in fear through several other performances, he hung onto his chair, earning a spot in the Top 16 and a chance to perform live!
So far Carlos has done fairly well on the show with his Top 16 take on Swedish House Mafia’s “Don’t You Worry Child” and then for the Top 13 he gave Motown a spin with Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On” and, for the November 7 redo night, performed "Cannonball" by Damien Rice.
Unfortunately for Carlos, "Cannonball" was his last number on the X stage. He was sent home during the November 13 Live Show right before the remaining contestants performed their '80s Night numbers. What was Carlos going to sing? Guess we'll never know...
