Who Is Lady Gaga’s Backup Singer, Chevonne, From The Voice Season 3?
On tonight’s blind auditions episode of The Voice, one artist’s bright red afro made it’s way on stage before she did. Twenty-six-year-old backup singer Chevonne was rockin’ a crazy red ‘do, sparkly gold eye shadow, and platform boots.
If her ensemble stood out, it was probably because she’s toured with one of the craziest dressers in the business — Lady Gaga. Chevonne was a backup singer on Lady Gaga’s Monster Ball Tour from 2009-2011.
The eclectic singer inspired coaches Blake Shelton and Cee Lo Green to turn their chairs for her performance of The Pretenders’ “Brass in Pocket.” Though Blake bragged about his success with former backup singers (last season’s winner Jermaine Paul sang backup for Alicia Keys), it was Cee Lo’s glimpse into Chevonne’s soul that convinced her to join his team.
“There was something painful in your voice. What’s that about?" Cee Lo asked.
“Growing up I had major eating issues,” Chevonne responded, visibly nervous. “I had eating disorder issues. I’ve been very insecure, and I’ve been way too hard on myself. I want to tell the story now that I’ve lived it.”
“That’s what I heard in your voice, and it’s not always obvious to everyone, but yours was obvious to me. It hit a sweet spot within me,” Cee Lo responded.
It was Cee Lo’s deeper connection that really got to Chevonne, and the former backup singer joined his team almost immediately.
On her Facebook page, Chevonne describes herself as a “funk-nasty Jersey girl,” but the contestant really tugged on our heartstrings tonight.
