American Idol 2014: Who Should Go Home From the Top 5 — May 1, 2014

You guys, it’s happened: It’s time to eliminate someone from American Idol, and we don’t want anyone to go home! Last night’s performance show perfectly showcased how much growth each contestant has had since the start of the season, and not a single person delivered a disappointing performance. So how do we ever choose who should go home from the Top 5 this week?

We hate to say it, but we have a very bad feeling it could be Sam Woolf. In a group of five truly awesome contestants, there has to be one who’s the least awesome, and judging by his performances last night, we’d have to say it’s Sam. We know what you’re thinking: Sam is physically too adorable to be sent home. We understand. We get it. We don’t want him to leave either. But it could happen.

Sam has grown so much since we first met him at his audition. He’s faced a lot of criticism, and he’s taken it seriously. And when he gave his best performance of the season last night — "Sing" by Ed Sheeran — he had so much confidence and so much energy (possibly fueled by Ariana Grande’s surprise appearance). But if the voters think about the way Sam’s done all season as a whole, he may end up having the worst vocal track record all things considered.

Also, based on last night’s performances alone, Caleb Johnson finally showed us his weak side. His rendition of Aerosmith’s “I Don’t Wanna Miss a Thing” is the first time we’ve felt he’s gotten on stage lacking something. But does he deserve to be sent home after months of bringing the house down? No — and we doubt he will.

If we do have to say goodbye to Sam tonight, it will definitely break our hearts. But we’re not worried — Sam’s already got a strong enough fanbase that will carry him into teen superstardom. Or so we hope.

Who do you think will go home tonight? Tell us your pick in the comments!
