Charlie Hunnam Breaks Silence on Fifty Shades: “I Have Family Stuff Going On”

When the news first broke that Charlie Hunnam was stepping down from his role as Christian Grey in the highly-anticipated film adaptation of Fifty Shades of Grey, the questions immediately started swirling.

Does he really think the movie will bomb? Is he unhappy with the script? Is his Sons of Anarchy schedule actually to blame?

Over the past week and a half, Charlie has kept quiet on the reason for his sudden exit, but he finally broke his silence at his first public event since dropping out of the film.

On Saturday, October 19, the 33-year-old actor joined his Sons of Anarchy co-stars at the 2nd Annual Hogs for Heart fundraiser benefitting education programs in Africa.

When asked how he’s been holding up since news of his exit broke, Charlie gave a very diplomatic answer. “I am doing good,” he revealed to E! Online. “I am just really concentrating on work. It’s been a really busy time. I have had some family stuff going on.”

E! also learned that Charlie’s father passed away earlier this year and he’ll be using this time to focus on family.

“[I’m] just trying to stay focused and stay positive and keep trying to do a good job at work. [...] I’ve got some family stuff I have to tend to. So when I wrap [Sons of Anarchy], I am going to go to England and see my people and then I have a film that I am doing with Guillermo del Toro. So I’m going to do that and concentrate on the final seasons of Sons.”

While Charlie didn’t address Fifty Shades of Grey directly, these are certainly more than adequate reasons for exiting the project. Whether or not there’s more to the story, we may never know. We do, however, wish him and his family all the best.
