Unfortunately, he wasn’t able to tap into that Star Wars nostalgia again on Week 3 for the Most Memorable Year theme. The Force was strong with Billy, but not with all of his body parts. He’s turning 77 in just a few days, and apparently his back is feeling the years. At the start of the March 31 broadcast they said he wouldn’t be able to dance.
Billy explained that his doctor said to step out, due to his chronic back problem. “I’ve had a wonderful, brilliant, fantastic blast of a time,” he said, then turned to his pro partner Emma Slater. “And working with this wonderful, beautiful young woman has been pure, pure joy.” He thanked everyone in the ballroom, and they gave him a standing ovation. He was going to dedicate this week’s dance to his grandchildren, and DWTS brought them out. They also played a recap of Billy and Emma’s journey.
It all happened before 8:30 p.m. so, once again, we had a mid-show departure, although this one was different from last week’s double elimination.
Billy Dee had scores of 15 for the first two weeks, so most fans expected him to go home this week anyway. At least he kind of got to go out on his own terms, and he’s putting his health first. Han and Chewie would approve!
Are you sorry to see Billy Dee go, or was it time?
