Why Joey Fatone Was Sent Home on DWTS All-Stars Week 2

Ugh! Last week we were so nervous for Joey Fatone and Kym Johnson to go home on Dancing With the Stars Season 15 All-Stars. Apparently our fears were just a week early.

So, yeah, Bristol Palin didn’t go home last night. In yesterday’s speculation post, we wondered if history would repeat itself with Bristol and Mark Ballas. So far, that’s the case. It also changes things in terms of scores sending All-Stars home. Last week, Pamela Anderson and Tristan MacManus got the lowest scores and were the first to be eliminated. This week, Joey and Kym were FOURTH from the bottom with a score of 22.5 out of 30, ahead of Bristol and Mark (score 18) and Kirstie Alley and Maksim Chmerkovskiy (21), and Kelly Monaco and Val Chmerkovskiy (22).

So why did Joey and Kym get the boot? Well, Bristol and Mark clearly have a following behind them, and Kirstie and Maks — did anyone even think they would be in jeopardy? It’s like they exist in their own little impermeable bubble. It will be interesting to see how long that lasts. Kelly has a huge General Hospital fan base, plus she and Val have a great connection. Team Vally seems to be doing well. Joey got a tongue-lashing from the judges for his Charlie Chaplin Quickstep to “Creep,” but we thought maybe fans would send him sympathy votes for such a harsh critique. Then again, his score of 22.5 tied him with both Emmitt Smith and Cheryl Burke and Drew Lachey and Anna Trebunskaya, which put him in that dreaded middle-of-the-pack zone. He seemed safe, and the perception of safety can be deadly.

We worried about Joey and Kym last week, which probably means others did too. This week we didn’t worry about him, which probably means others didn’t worry either, perhaps lending extra votes to others deemed more “in jeopardy.” Maybe that’s what went wrong. Then again, who knows. This season is already messing with our minds. Maybe Joey and Kym’s fan base was never on the level with the huge juggernauts this season. Last week, Drew and Anna were in the bottom two. This week, Season 5 champion Helio Castroneves and his partner Chelsie Hightower — who got a score of 23 out of 30 — were in the bottom two.

Nothing makes sense! And there’s a double elimination next week. We can’t even imagine who might be next.

“You know, I’ll miss everybody out here,” Joey said, after he and Kym were declared the couple to leave, “‘Because everybody was great. ... For me, I’m actually going to a wedding tomorrow so I don’t give a damn! I’m going to have a good time. To be honest, everybody had a good time here. I know that me and Kym [he turned to her] I didn’t let you down, we had a great time. People said I was fun and that’s all that matters. God bless you guys [pointing to the judges] for your votes. I appreciate it, I respect it, but as long as I had fun I don’t care what your votes say. But I appreciate it, respectfully.” Kym added, “I’m upset, I’m sad, I’m not gonna lie. It happens. It’s All-Stars, it’s an amazing season to be a part of.”

Are you sad to see Joey and Kym leave? Did you vote for them to stay?

On the Red Carpet post-elimination video:

During the video, Melissa Rycroft and Tony Dovolani hugged them and shared their love. "I’m going to miss you humping my leg," Tony joked to Joey. Joey said he'd be back to see Melissa and Tony in the finale. "From your mouth to God's ears!" Tony said.
