Why Did Kanye West Skip the Grammys This Year?

While Kanye West’s peers in the music industry were donning their formalwear and practicing their acceptance speeches on Sunday, the Yeezus rapper was settling in for a quiet night at home.

Kanye, who was nominated for two Grammy awards, decided to take the night off, opting instead to spend the night with fiancee Kim Kardashian and daughter North West at the Kardashian/Jenner family’s Malibu home.

According to HollywoodLife, Kanye decided to skip the awards ceremony thanks to his fury that his critically-acclaimed album had received so few nominations from others in the industry.

Kanye had expressed his frustration at his lack of nominations just a month prior to the Grammys during a show in Phoenix, at which he railed against the awards show for failing to sufficiently recognize his genius.

Yeezus is the top one or two album on every single list, but only gets two nominations from the Grammys. What are they trying to say?” he lamented. “F—k those nominations.”

As Taylor Swift knows, Kanye has a history of making his feelings about the distribution of various awards known, so it seems as though he may have made the right call choosing to skip the awards show entirely rather than ruin the evening for other performers.

During his acceptance speech for The College Dropout in 2005, Kanye acknowledged the speculation that he might have a less-than-favorable response to losing to another artist.

“A lot of people don’t appreciate their moment ‘til it’s past,” he explained. “I plan to celebrate. I plan to celebrate and scream and pop champagne every chance I get … Everybody wanted to know what I would do if I didn’t win. I guess we’ll never know.”

Do you think Kanye made the right choice by staying home?
