Let’s face it: TVD has been getting crowded. Nadia. Katherine. Dr. Wes. Enzo. All characters who, though interesting, are not the focus on this show. They just take time away from the characters who we’ve been with from the beginning. We’re not saying they’re any less important than those characters — change on a television show can be a good thing — but TVD had to make a choice. Some people had to die. We’re sad one of those characters was Katherine, but that’s the way the cookie crumbles.
There was a turning point in the Katherine storyline: the moment she chose to steal Elena’s body from her. Up until that moment, the show had the chance to tell a much more interesting story: Katherine’s redemption, as realized through her time as human. We would have loved to see that story, but instead Katherine was turned into the villain again — the villain who the show deems unforgivable (because we all know Damon has been just as evil as Katherine, but manages to keep the show’s skewed sense of morality and opportunity for salvation tipped in his favor).
Even in her death, Katherine was a badass who didn’t apologize for any of her life choices. This made her one of the strongest characters on the show. It also made her death possible. Choosing to see Nadia one last time despite knowing she would be walking to her death was as close to redemption as Katherine was going to get — and she chose it for herself. She chose to put someone else before her. She chose to meet death on her own terms (by poisoning Elena).
Katherine’s goodbye scene was kind of amazing because she basically went around and explained how it was she had made every one of the other characters’ lives that much better in her “villainy.” And we were right there with her for most of her logic, especially on the Damon front. We understand that Katherine totally screwed with his heart, and that was horrible, but we also think Damon needs to start taking responsibility for his actions instead of blaming everyone else (namely, Katherine). With Katherine’s death, maybe that will be possible.
Do you think killing Katherine was the right move for the show? Why or why not? Sound off in the comments below!
