Why Was Contestant Micah Johnson Eliminated on American Idol 2013?

While Janelle Arthur wowed the judges (and many viewers) with her flawless rendition of Randy Travis and Carrie Underwood’s “I Told You So” on American Idol last night, it was that song that caused Micah Johnson’s shocking exit last week. What gives?

The teddy bear-like singer seemed to captivate the judges from his first audition in Long Beach, not only with his unique take on “Chicken Fried,” but with his emotional story about getting nerve damage while getting his tonsils removed. The incident left him with a pretty significant speech impediment but, much like in the case of Lazaro Arbos, there is no sign of it when he sings.

There is some online buzz that seems to suggest that it’s because of Lazaro that Micah was sent home -- perhaps the judges thought there was only room for one type of backstory like this. Could that be so? We have to say, we thought Micah was more talented than Lazaro. Who do you think is better?

What do you think caused Micah Johnson’s seemingly premature departure?
