Will Hayley Marshall Die in The Originals Season 1 Finale?

Scuttlebutt has it that someone will die in the Season 1 finale of The Originals. We’re pretty much worried about every character, but we’re particularly concerned for Hayley (Phoebe Tonkin), the werewolf soon-to-be-mama who will do anything to save her child. Will Hayley die in the Season 1 finale?

The synopsis for Season 1, Episode 22 (“From a Cradle to a Grave”) tells us that Hayley “is determined to do whatever it takes to keep her unborn baby safe and away from the witches,” and we’re worried just how far the desperate mother will go to ensure her baby’s safety. We have no doubt Hayley would sacrifice her own life for her child’s. Would the witches accept the switch? The elders have outlined to that they want Genevieve to sacrifice the hybrid baby to build their power. Granted, the baby’s witch/werewolf/vampire blood is probably more powerful that Hayley’s, but a werewolf queen sacrifice ain’t too shabby. And infant sacrifice is pretty grisly — even for a bunch of dead witches.

There’s also a noticeable lack of Hayley in the final shots of the extended promo for the season finale, in which we see Elijah reaching towards something — presumably, the baby? — Klaus is holding. Earlier in the promo, we see Klaus pinned up against the church’s wall, screaming as he looks down at Hayley holding the baby. Unlike Klaus, Hayley is not panicked, but has a calm countenance that could be interpreted as resigned. Has Hayley already made a deal with the witches? Is this what Klaus is trying to escape to prevent?

We have to admit: single fatherhood is a much more interesting way for Klaus to earn his Redemption Card than a sacrifice of his own life for those he loves. Sure, dying to benefit others may be the go-to move of heroes the fictional world over, but there’s something to be said for the struggle in surviving, in being there for your loved ones. That being said, we’d rather see the sitcom that is sure to be both Klaus and Hayley raising this child together, thank you very much, show.

We’re also hesitant to believe that The Originals would kill Hayley off given that they have already lost the presence of one strong female lead in Rebekah’s departure as a show regular. Hayley’s own storyline and character has been given more attention since Rebekah’s exit, and we’d like to see the focus on her character — whose motivations, though intertwined, are still very different from Klaus and Elijah’s — continue into Season 2. There’s also still much to explore in the relationship between Elijah and Hayley. Though this show is self-definitively not about romance in the same way its source material is, this is still The CW. Romance is kind of a prerequisite, and Haylijah is arguably the strongest ship on this show — at least at this point.

Do you think Hayley will die in the Season 1 finale? Why or why not? Sound off in the comments below!

The Originals airs Tuesday nights at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.
