Woman Accidentally Becomes Pregnant With Twins From Wrong Embryos

An Italian woman couldn’t really rejoice over the news of her pregnancy with twins. Instead she had a very rude awakening when she discovered that she was impregnated with another woman’s embryos. It turns out they were accidentally implanted in her uterus due to an error at the hospital’s fertility clinic.

Raw Story reports that the woman and her husband were undergoing treatment on December 4 at the Sandro Pertini hospital in Rome, Italy, when the mix-up occurred. Three other couples were also undergoing fertility treatments at the same time. Italy’s Health Ministry said it would be investigating the matter and attempting to determine exactly how the error happened.

“The national standards on assisted fertilisation, which are based on European directives, are very rigorous, and if applied correctly, guarantee the traceability of all biological material used in the reproduction process,” Beatrice Lorenzin, Italian Health Minister, told press Sunday.

The Rome health authority also said that it only became aware of the problem on March 27. Embryo implantation procedures at the hospital have been put on hold until the investigation is complete, and it’s determined whether any other embryos were mishandled.

What would you do in this situation? Weigh in below!
