Once Upon a Time in Wonderland: 5 Things to Love About Sophie Lowe

We’re exciting about Once Upon a Time’s upcoming spin-off, Once Upon a Time in Wonderland, for many, many reasons, but at the top of the list is Sophie Lowe. Sophie is the English-born, Aussie actress (and Blake Lively look-alike) who will be playing Alice in the ABC fantasy adventure, set to premiere on Thursdays this fall. If you have watched any of the trailers for Wonderland, you can guess why Sophie has already won our hearts. She fills the shoes of the iconic character with a subtle badassery and smart sentimentality. Here are five reasons we think you’re going to love this up-and-coming actress.

She’s super creative

Twenty-three-year-old Sophie is a woman of many talents. She did some modeling in her early teens, but eventually deciding to focus on her dancing. She attended Sydney’s McDonald School of Performing Arts to pursue the passion, and fell in love with acting, deciding to pursue the craft professionally. As if that were not enough to keep the girl busy, Sophie also writes songs and poetry, and is a photographer. She most recently released a single, titled “A Runner,” under the name SOLO. We have a feeling she is well-equipped to handle anything Wonderland might throw her way. Check out her single below!

She’s a writer and director, too

Sophie wrote, directed and starred in this short film with fellow McDonald alum Rhys Wakefield. “A Man Walks Into a Bar” is a humorous twist on the traditional one-night stand scenario. We don’t want to give away the twist, but check out the short film at the link above, and revel in the short’s clever set-up and Sophie’s ability to sell both drama and comedy as an actress. We hope she gets the chance to do both in Wonderland!

She’s driven

Check out this video interview with Sophie that has the young actor describing her acting style and influences. She says Baz Luhrmann's Romeo and Juliet is the film that made her want to become an actor, and calls Juliet her dream role. Which director would she like to work with? Sophia Coppola, she says, because she sees the world in a similar way to how Coppola films it. Sophie says she write backstories for her character. We wonder if she has made her own expansion to the Alice canon yet!

She was phenomenal in her big-screen debut

Sophie wowed the critics with her turn as Kate in Beautiful Kate, her first feature film. In the Australian flick, Sophie played the title character, the late and lovely Kate, whose family is still trying to deal with her death 20 years later as their father is dying. Sophia was nominated for an AFI for Best Lead Actress for the role. You can check out the trailer for the film here.

She’s already immersed in the part

Sophie seems to go above and beyond when it comes to researching her role. If this recent tweet is anything to go by, she’s super passionate about Wonderland. Sophie shared a link to a collection of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland illustrations done by Salvador Dali in 1969. The trippy yet gorgeous illustrations definitely imagine Alice in a new way - a spirit we’re sure Sophie and others involved with the upcoming series can relate to.

Do you think Wonderland cast their Alice well? Have you seen Sophie in anything else? Let us know in the comments below!
