Demi Lovato's biological father, Patrick Lovato, has passed away, a representative for the X Factor judge confirmed.
The "Heart Attack" singer's older sister, 25-year-old Dallas, posted to Twitter on Saturday, June 22, "Rest in peace daddy I love you," and fans rushed to the social media outlet, making #RIPPatrickLovato a trending topic.
The 20-year-old's mom, Dianna De La Garza, also tweeted, "Thank you for the outpouring of love and prayers. Y'all are amazing!"
Demi has yet to comment on her father's death. She and her biological father shared a tumultuous relationship, and he was the subject of her 2011 song, "For the Love of a Daughter" from her Unbroken album.
Due to the shocking death, Demi had to cancel her X Factor work commitments on Saturday. She did not attend a photoshoot with fellow judges Simon Cowell, Kelly Rowland, Paulina Rubio, and host Mario Lopez. Mario tweeted a picture of the group to let Demi know they were thinking of her. He wrote: "With my @TheXFactorUSA team! Missing @ddlovato today... :(." Even Simon took to Twitter to send his support: "My thoughts are with you Demi."
In 2010, when the former Disney star was seeking treatment for emotional and physical issues, her estranged father spoke out to the press, trying — and failing — to reach the singer/actress.
All the way back in 2009, Demi spoke to New York Daily News about her and her father's situation. "The last time I talked to him was two years ago. You try to have faith in somebody, even when you're the last person that believes in him. But when somebody lets you down after you've been the only one there for them, and so many times, you don't know what else to do." But hope eventually faded. "I had to cut off all connection. It was hurting me too much," she said in a later interview.
Patrick spoke to Radar Online in October 2011, when he was living in New Mexico. He told the site he was ailing from cancer and trying to get through to his daughter. "It is not like I want anything from her, all I want is her love," he said. Later he told Radar Online that he got a call from Demi: "She told me she loved me, she really loves her daddy. She told me she's getting better."
