Where have you been all our lives, Denise Weeks? Well, apparently the subway. This 41-year-old sings for her supper while busy New Yorkers make their commute. We’re quite certain if she were ever in the same car with us, we’d take notice. Denise gave us full-body chills with her soulful, rendition of Whitney Houston’s “The Greatest Love of All.” She also impressed the judges, but not before Simon Cowell instructed her to sing without the track.
“You’re rushing,” Simon said as he interrupted Denise. He then told her that she wasn’t giving herself time to express the emotion of the song. Rather than sending her off stage to think about what she’d done, he told her to try again, this time a capella, and let the song “breathe.” In doing so, she completely took our breath away, giving a Whitney-caliber performance. In fact, if you close your eyes and squint, your mind may play tricks on you!
Given the magnitude of her talent, the judges were astounded as to why she was never discovered. Denise alluded to a few opportunities to record, but said she had simply been “waiting for the X Factor. “The X Factor was waiting for you,” Simon replied.
