The X Factor is finally done with auditions but rather than asking the contestants to bust their butts in bootcamp, the show has a new challenge planned for its third season.

To cut the group of 40 down to a top 16, judges Simon, Paulina, Kelly, and Demi will evaluate a performance from each act. Ten contestants in each category — boys, girls, groups, and over 25s — will compete per night. The top four entertainers from each judge's team will get a seat in a special white chair (or sofas, if you're part of a group).

That doesn't mean the chair-sitter is safe, however. Depending on the rest of the night's auditions, the contestant(s) can lose a spot, the idea being that the strongest performers will rise to the top. Think of it like The Hunger Games meets musical chairs meets Simon Cowell.

Sound rough? You bet it does. By the end of the Four Chair Challenge rounds more than half of the acts we've come to love will be back out on the street, trying to make their dreams come true.

Check back here for highlights from the Four Chair Challenge including performances by those lucky enough to make the Top 16.
