The X Factor is all about mixing it up this year. First, they throw us the curveball known as the Four Chair Challenge. Now, with Live Shows underway, we find out that during the show’s very first night back the judges will be cutting four acts, one from each category.

To help Simon, Paulina, Demi, and Kelly make up their minds, the show solicited responses from us, the fans. As the show’s “fifth judge,” as Mario Lopez put it, audience members can try and keep their favorite around. Did the judges listen? Maybe.

So who did and didn’t make the Top 12?

Demi Lovato (Girls): For her first Live Show cut, Demi Lovato sent Danie Geimer home. Danie’s less than stupendous take on Miley Cyrus’s “Wrecking Ball” just wasn’t enough to keep her on the Girls team. Remaining contestants: Ellona Santiago, Rion Paige, and Khaya Cohen

Paulina Rubio (Boys): Faced with a tough choice, Paulina Rubio didn’t know which of the boys to send packing. Her choice? Josh Levi. The youngest member of the team and his rendition of Rihanna’s “Only Girl In the World” didn’t prove strong enough for the Top 12. Remaining contestants: Carlito Olivero, Carlos Guevara, Tim Olstad

Kelly Rowland (Over 25s): With arguably the strongest performances of the night, the Over 25s were neck and neck for those final three spots. Conflicted, Kelly Rowland eventually decided to cut James Kenney from the competition after his take on Taylor Swift’s “Red.” Remaining contestants: Rachel Potter, Jeff Gutt, and Lillie McCloud

Simon Cowell (Groups): Simon Cowell knows a thing or two about groups. After inviting the teams over to his home to practice, Simon seems uncharacteristically pleased with all four groups. But one’s gotta go home. Unfortunately, tonight that’s Roxxy Montana despite a good showing of Lorde’s “Royals.” Remaining contestants: Restless Road, Alex & Sierra, Sweet Suspense

What did you make of tonight’s eliminations? Did the judges make the right choices? Sound off in the comments below.
