Nope. Oh, sorry. Thorough answers only here. Let’s start at the beginning.

First of all, One Direction never entered The X Factor U.K. Huh? What does that mean exactly?

Well, like Fifth Harmony and (the less well-faring) Lyric 145 and Playback, the five guys we now know as 1D entered the competition as solo artists. However, the evil genius known as Simon Cowell, who created the show, put the guys together into a group. The group was then named One Direction.

All of this happened in 2010 when Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, and Louis Tomlinson appeared on the seventh season (or “series,” as they call it in England) of the show. Although they did well throughout the competition, the boys did not come out the winners, finishing third to winner Matt Cardle and runner-up Rebecca Ferguson, neither of whom have posters hanging up on our walls.

The boys then signed to Syco Records (Simon Cowell’s label) in the UK and Columbia Records in the US. The rest is, as we say in the biz, history. (AKA lots of success, matching suits, and rumored relationships with famous women. Natch.)
