When 32-year-old Don Philip walked out onto the X Factor stage for his audition in San Francisco, he totally lost it. “I never thought I would see her again,” he said tearfully, talking about judge Britney Spears.

Turns out the two sang the duet “I Will Still Love You,” on Britney’s 1999 debut album, Hit Me Baby One More Time. Okay, fair enough, we’d probably lose our ish too. Britney and the judges were excited to see Don sing. After finding out who he was, Simon Cowell asked, “Where have you been?” It seemed promising and the judges were... disappointed.

“It seems like you might have been through a lot in the last few years. But your voice isn’t up to the level of The X Factor,” Britney told him, reluctantly. All four judges voted not to keep him and after he left the stage, both he and Brit had a little moment. Simon even got out of his chair to console the pop princess, asking if she was okay.

Meanwhile, Don, who gave up a recording contract at age 19 because of “some deep inner demons,” didn’t recover quite as quickly as Britney. What we didn’t see is that apparently Don had begun his audition by coming out to Britney. (Nice editing, FOX.) According to RumorFix, “Don says he botched his audition after that. ‘I just had this Aha moment — I had nothing left.’”

Well, that would do it...
