Simon Cowell is definitely earning his talent show mogul status after the American debut of The X Factor this season. While it never reached anywhere near his projected 20 million viewer rating, SiCo did rake in $42 million after inking a deal with Sony to tether the Fox series to his production company Syco Entertainment. Not too shabby, considering everything from Nicole Scherzinger's future as a judge, to Steve Jones' future as the host, to the existence of the groups category are up in the air for Season 2.
We guess those are the perks of the show being Simon's brainchild. We'll see if The X Factor USA winner Melanie Amaro has the same staying power as the UK version's previous winners, which we're sure will dilute the show's potency a la American Idol if she fizzles.
But if anyone could be Kelly Clarkson 2.0, it's Melanie. (Although, if you ask us, what would have made the show fresh, new, and different would have been one of the tween sensations winning the crown and becoming the new Justin Bieber, but whatever. We guess we'll take another ballad-belting R&B diva. Sigh.)
Of course, Simon is all-too-smug about being the winner's mentor and at the show's helm, so you can expect him to fire back on any dissenters who think one of the others should have won and left Melanie to the concession prize of a long and successful Broadway career.
