No, Melanie Amaro's not literally on fire — though firefighters were not polled — but tastemakers and social networkers have decided that the nineteen-year-old firebrand has hit frontrunner status along with pint-sized Rachel Crow.

Amaro blew the judges away with her rendition of Michael Jackson’s “The Man in the Mirror”; indeed, Simon Cowell called Amaro’s performance “bloody fantastic” and “the best … of the entire competition so far.” We might accuse Cowell of bias — Amaro is one of his girls, after all — but he sure hasn’t said that about any of the other people he’s mentoring!

L.A. Reid, for his part, shrugged off the song choice as “not very inventive,” but he’s suffering even worse than Cowell in the bias department.

Cowell, in fits of ecstasy, also said “you remind me of a Little Beyoncé! ... You’re back in the game!” Considering that Cowell kicked Amaro off The X Factor only to reel her back in, this is something of a funny comment. But it looks like he really meant it when he said that re-inducting Amaro into the fold was ultimately good for the singer’s chances!
