Were the live semi-finals X Factor Season 2 on December 13 unusually awesome, or was that just our imagination? With each contestant singing two songs — one they chose to represent them, and one their mentors chose to send them to the finals — there was opportunity aplenty to get to know the final four just a little bit more.

Carly Rose Sonenclar sang Elton John’s “Your Song” and John Lennon’s “Imagine.” While the 13 year old’s piano-playing skills were impressive, her performances were both a little unfocused and she got her first negative feedback from judges.

37-year-old Tate Stevens kept up his country flare with Craig Morgan’s “Bonfire” and made us fall in love with him more with Clay Walker’s “Fall.” He got largely awesome responses from the judges, but neither choice was a surprise for the singer who has sung country versions of even non-country songs the duration of the competition.

Cali trio Emblem3 was the star act of the night, although their reggae-heavy cover of Peter Frampton’s “Baby I Love Your Way” wasn’t our favorite thing that ever happened. Their high-energy take on The Beatles’ “Hey Jude” redeemed any doubts we had about them.

Lady quintet (better than girl group, right?) Fifth Harmony took a giant leap away from their normal mic-stand-centric songs with a crazy “magical” rendition of Ellie Goulding’s “Anything is Possible,” but their repeat performance of Shontelle’s “Impossible” failed to make our dreams come true.

Watch all the performances here and then vote below on who you think is going home tonight.
