Demi Lovato is a lot of things: a beautiful woman, incredible singer, fantastic role model, and bad-ass X Factor mentor. So, what was it that launched Ms. D into the spotlight?

She’s always been a great performer, and some of that probably came from her mom, who was a Dallas Cowboys cheerleader before Demi was born. The younger Lovato carried on the Cowboys tradition by performing at a halftime show with Leann Rimes.

Football and high kicks aside, Demi’s first break came in 2002, when she became a series regular on Barney & Friends alongside Selena Gomez. If purple isn’t your color, or you were just too old for the show, you probs first saw Demi when she played Mitchie Torres in Camp Rock and Camp Rock 2.

She’s filmed a bunch of guest starring roles to boot, on shows like Grey’s Anatomy and Prison Break. Really though? It’s her soaring vocals on songs like “This Is Me” from Camp Rock and her album 2008 album Don’t Forget, both of which had the help of The Jonas Brothers, that really put her on our radar.

Acting-wise, she continued her Disney reign by starring in the television show Sonny with a Chance. Since then, she’s continued to make beautiful music, topping the charts with singles like “Skyscraper” and “Give Your Heart a Break.”

Demi made headlines when, part way through the Camp Rock tour, she checked herself into rehab for anorexia, bulimia, cutting, and severe depression. She has publicly dealt with her problems, as well as bipolar disorder, and has gained a following because of her honesty.

Now, she sings and tours and campaigns against bullying while simultaneously sitting on the X Factor judging panel. So, why is she famous? In short, because she's amazing.
