Tate Stevens has been a super-solid, formidable opponent to Carly Rose Sonenclar this season on The X Factor. Every week, the two have been ranked at numbers 1 and 2 on the leaderboard, and even though the standings weren’t revealed on the semi-finals live results show, both Tate and Carly made it through to the finals.

One thing that has made XF fun to watch this year is that things change every single week. And it’s not just the song choices that keep us on our toes — showrunners mix things up by throwing in group numbers, double performances, and surprise musical guests. So, what will the finale bring? We’re not sure yet.

After the semi-finals show on December 12, Tate caught up with reporters to talk about his plan for the finale. On everybody’s mind? Which fellow contestant he would like to be the gravy to his mashed potatoes in a duet.

As far as Fifth Harmony, goes, Tate referenced their performance of Ellie Goulding’s “Anything Could Happen,” saying a duet with the girl group “would be cool but it would be different! They’d dress me up as one of the cupcakes.”

So, what about singing with the 13-year-old who has kept him on his toes this whole time? He seemed into the idea, saying, “I think Carly really is the one that I could because you could do those big duet songs. Because she’s got such a powerful voice I could do a duet and we could wail away at it together.”

As for other possible partners, it seems like the finale is when the show will pull out all the stops. So, will the country crooner get to sing with one of his idols? “[W]e picked a couple people. I asked for Garth, I did, and they said unfortunately he was not one of the choices.” Guess we’ll have to wait and see who picks up the other mic when the finale goes down on December 19.
