X-Men Days of Future Past — See J.Law, Hugh, Halle and More in Epic New Trailer (VIDEO)

2014 is shaping up to be an X-traordinary year in blockbuster cinema, thanks in part to the May release of X-Men: Days of Future Past.

To amp up the excitement even higher, 20th Century Fox just released the second official trailer for the highly-anticipated sequel on YouTube.

The film charts two chronologies in the story of the super-powered mutants — the present-day timeframe established by the original X-Men film trilogy and the 1970s-era continuation of X-Men: First Class.

In the story, frenemies Professor X (Patrick Stewart) and Magneto (Ian McKellen) realize that mutants are on the "edge of extinction" — and they send Wolverine's (Hugh Jackman) consciousness back to his body in the 1970s with a new mission: to end the war before it begins.

Once he time-jumps, Wolvie finds himself in the middle of a Cold War — not so much the geopolitical one as the bad blood formed between between younger Professor X (James McAvoy) and younger Magneto (Michael Fassbender).

"You took the things that mean the most to me," young Professor X tells Magneto — as we see shots of Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence) being a shapeshifting badass.

"Maybe you should have fought harder for them," Magneto replies.

We also see glimpses of other mutants — the weather-controlling Storm (Halle Berry), ice-generating Iceman (Shawn Ashmore), solids-traversing Kitty (Ellen Page), and hulking-out Beast (Nicholas Hoult).

All of the time-tripping action kicks off when the film hits theaters on May 23. In the meantime, check out the trailer below and give us your thoughts in the comment section!
