Selena Gomez Supports Children in Need With UNICEF Trip to Nepal — See the Amazing Photos!
Selena Gomez has been focusing on rediscovering a healthy and happy lifestyle following her split from Justin Bieber and her brief stint in rehab earlier this year. Selena’s taking her makeover incredibly seriously, and she’s also using this time to give back to those in need.
Taking her mind off her own personal issues, the 21-year-old singer hopped a plane for Nepal as a Youth Ambassador for UNICEF. Selena paid a visit to the Satbariya Rapti Secondary School, in hopes of raising awareness for the needs of underprivileged children. The “Come & Get It” singer watched them as they studied, then joined them in traditional folk songs and dances. She met with women in Hapur Village who mediate cases of conflict and child abuse, and spoke with health volunteers in Gangaparaspur Village to learn about their efforts to reduce illness among mothers and their kids.
“This visit to Nepal was extraordinarily powerful — at times devastating and heartbreaking, but also incredibly inspiring,” Selena said in a press release following the trip. “At first when you witness children living in extreme poverty, you wonder how it is possible that they can be deprived of their basic human needs and rights. Then you talk to these children and you see hope, promise, and a bright future. This generation of children believes they can make a difference, and they take action. It starts with quality education and leadership opportunities, like those UNICEF is providing.”
Selena also spoke to a journalist in Nepal, revealing that she was seeking “mental peace.” We certainly hope she found it, and that she also made a positive impact in the process!
