Zach Roerig Reveals Why He’s Not Surprised Matt Has Survived 100 Episodes

The 100th episode of The Vampire Diaries has the TVD cast getting nostalgic, and reminiscing about episodes past. What did Zach Roerig (Matt Donovan) tell E! Online was his favorite scene of TVD ever?

Zach chose the tear-jerker of all tearjerkers as his favorite TVD scene of all time. "When Alaric [Matt Davis] walked out of the tomb and everyone was in the woods because it was one of the first times in a long time we'd all been together again," Zach said. "And we all knew he was going to be leaving, even though that wasn't his exit. It was a very moving night."

The scene Zach is referring to came at the end of Season 3, Episode 20 (“Do Not Go Gentle”), and we still cry just thinking about it. You can try your hand at keeping a dry eye while watching Alaric lock himself in a tomb to die while his loved ones look on. It’s probably good practice for whatever is going down in the 100th episode.

Might Matt be the next TVDer to die? Zach doesn’t seem to think so. When asked if he was surprised that his character had survived this long, he said, "I hope that this doesn't seal my fate, but yes and no. At this point, I'm not surprised because the show has gone to so many different levels that they've taken it off the charts of reality and Matt's kind of the only source that anchors the show down. This sounds super cheesy, I know, but Matt's kind of the lighthouse in a crazy supernatural storm."

We totally agree. Matt is more-or-less the only non-supernatural character on this show right now. We’re not sure if the show would risk killing him off. Then again, when has TVD ever played it safe?

Are you surprised by Zach’s pick for favorite scene? Do you think Matt will continue to not-die on TVD? Sound off in the comments below!

The Vampire Diaries airs on Thursdays at 8 p.m. on The CW.
