UPDATE (6/29/2014): It looks like Zendaya Coleman won't be starring in the Aaliyah biopic after all. According to E! Online, Zendaya's rep says that "Zendaya is no longer involved in the project."
Sources say that the Lifetime film was having trouble acquiring the rights to Aaliyah's music, and Zendaya only wanted to be involved if the movie would pay tribute to Aaliyah in the right way.
UPDATE: Lifetime has revealed that Zendaya Coleman really is that somebody! The Disney star, according to E! News, is all set to play Aaliyah in the upcoming TV biopic, based on the biography Aaliyah: More Than a Woman. The film, tentatively titled Aaliyah: Princess of R&B, will follow the "Try Again" singer from being discovered on Star Search to her tragic, early death at 22, Lifetime confirms.

Remember when we questioned whether or not that rumored VH1 Aaliyah biopic was ever going to come to fruition? Well, it looks like the movie has officially been greenlit and former Dancing With the Stars contestant Zendaya Coleman is tapped to play Aaliyah!
According to sources at Necole Bitchie, the backup dancer-turned-Disney actress will be starring in the film, which is set to debut on VH1 later this year.
As we reported, there was tons of back and forth with regards to production of the film, with Aaliyah’s family being against the idea back in 2012 when BET’s 106 & Park host, R&B singer Keshia Chante, was approached for the titular role.
For almost two years, rumors continued to persist about the status of the film, and most fans thought it was all a sham until earlier this year, when actress Tristin Mays took to Instagram to announce that she auditioned for a role as Aaliyah, but didn’t get it. Soon after, Keshia took to social media to post an Aaliyah-inspired photo of herself, which she cryptically captioned, “The Audition.”
Now, Necole Bitchie, has announced that Zendaya beat out Keshia and the official statement from VH1 is set to be released this week.
Of course, this is all rumored for now, as neither Zendaya, Keshia, or VH1 has said anything about the project. Furthermore, some fans are speculating that Keshia is still a part of the mythical movie, with Zendaya playing a young version of Aaliyah, while Keshia plays the adult.
All we know is that, if any of this is true, we can’t wait to see the VH1 release!
